How to Get Medical Bills Paid for a Personal Injury

Personal injury medical bills are the most likely bills to be paid in a personal injury settlement or court ordered award. Because of this, it is easy to obtain money for your bills, but obtaining enough compensation to cover all of your bills requires following some general guidelines.

Become a Bookkeeper

Obtaining compensation for your medical bills is not difficult – if you have the documentation to support your request and need. Collect all of your bills, documents and other paperwork related to your medical expenses and make copies of them so that you will always have the paperwork you need. Depending on your claim or lawsuit, you may or may not need to provide this documentation to the other party or insurance company.

Ask For Compensation for Everything

You cannot be compensated for things for which you do not ask. A mistake most injured parties make in their claim or lawsuit is not asking for enough money for their previously incurred medical expenses and costs. Prior to calculating the amount of your demand, collect all of your documents that are related to your medical expenses and tally the total you have spent on treatment. This amount is the bare minimum of what you should request in your claim or lawsuit.

Don’t Overlook Future Expenses

Even if you haven’t been permanently injured, chances are good that you will need future care for your injury, albeit it a very small amount. When calculating the amount of your request, include a sum of money for your future care. This will enable you to seek the future treatment you may need.

Include Compensation from Third Parties

When seeking compensation for your medical bills from a personal injury, the key is to appear as though you are asking for the money to which you are entitled. The best way to do this is to include and reduce the amount of compensation you seek by the amount of money you have received from third parties, such as your medical insurance company. This will demonstrate that you are not out to scam the party or company, but rather that you are in dire need of funds for your treatment.

Be Thorough and Follow Instructions

If you are filing your request for compensation for a claim, make sure to make your monetary request fulfill all the insurance company’s requirements. If you are filing a lawsuit in court, make a demand for compensation in your first filing. Tell the court or the insurance company exactly what you seek and why you seek that amount. You do not need to include too much documentation at this point, but state that you are able to provide more evidence of your damages if requested.

Obtain Legal Advice

If you have been injured and incurred medical expenses as a result, seek legal assistance with your claim. A lawyer will review the facts of your injury and your expenses and advise you about the best methods to obtain compensation for your damages.
