Workers Warned to Beware of ‘Under the Table’ Settlements
June 8, 2009
Because of the recent economic downturn, workers, especially those in the fields of construction and maintenance, are being warned to avoid companies that create “fly-by-night” projects. These employers may be operating illegally and without the appropriate workers’ compensation insurance. Also, they may not be following proper safety procedures. This means that the chance of personal injury is greater, and that in the event of an accident, an individual may or may not receive a payout for an on-the-job injury.
Oftentimes, in the event of an accident, a seedy employer will offer to pay the employee a settlement if he or she promises not to contact a lawyer. Though this quick solution may appear to be ideal, workers are advised to always consult a lawyer in a personal injury case.
A lawyer will ensure that the settlement is substantial to cover medical expenses, physical and mental damages and lost wages from work. This may be accomplished outside of the courtroom, but it should always be done with professional legal counsel. Also, the legal fees can generally be covered in an adequate settlement.
