Three Vehicle Fatal Crash on I-10 in St. Charles Parish
On Sunday November 25, 2007 at 12:01 am, Louisiana State Police, Troop B investigated a three vehicle fatal crash on I-10 eastbound near mile post 219. The crash involved a Toyota Celica driven by Michael Rigamer, of Kenner, a Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Ruddy Hutton, of Hammond and a Chevrolet Suburban driven by Louis Garces, of Kenner. The Toyota was traveling eastbound on I-10 near mile post 219 at a high rate speed at which time the driver for an unknown reason lost control of his vehicle and traveled off of the left side of the roadway striking the cement guardrail. The Toyota then traveled into the middle of I-10 east, where it was disabled with no lights. Shortly after becoming disabled in the middle of the roadway the Toyota was struck by the Chevrolet Cavalier and the Chevrolet Suburban. After striking the Toyota, the Cavalier struck the right guardrail, overturned and came to rest upright, in the right lane of I-10 east. The Chevrolet Suburban also struck the Toyota and the right guardrail, but the drivers of the Cavalier and the Suburban were unsure which vehicle struck the Toyota first.
The front passenger of the Toyota, Meghan Stabile, of Luling was found in the right lane of I-10 eastbound with fatal injuries. Evidence on the scene suggested that Stabile attempted to exit the Toyota before the secondary impacts occurred.
Speed and driver impairment are suspected on the part of the driver of the Toyota. Charges are pending toxicology results.
All three drivers were transported to Kenner Regional Hospital with minor to moderate injuries. Senior Trooper Steve Volante is continuing his investigation.
I-10 eastbound was completely shut down from the time of the crash until 3:24 am.
