In Las Vegas, Elderly Lady Succumbs To Injuries From Previous Fire
A 76-year-old woman died yesterday from injuries she suffered in a house fire. The cause of that fire remains under investigation.
Fire dispatchers received numerous calls at 8:51 a.m. on July 5 that a house at 515 Bayberry Drive (Bonanza/Nellis) was on fire. As firefighters headed to the scene, a column of thick smoke could be seen from all around the valley. When firefighters arrived on scene, an elderly lady, who appeared to be badly burned, was standing in the driveway. Heavy flames could be seen on the rear of the one-story wood frame/stucco house. The woman was immediately put in an ambulance and taken to the burn unit at UMC. Paramedics believe she had first and second degree burns over 50 percent of her body. Firefighters went behind the house and found that the patio area, which appeared to have a wood cover, was fully involved with fire that was entering the interior of the house through roof vents and windows broken by the fire.
The fire destroyed the patio cover and damaged the roof, attic, one bedroom and kitchen of the house. Damage was estimated at $60,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The woman told firefighters she was home alone watching TV and noticed the patio on fire. It is unclear what happened after that and why she was burned. Because of her condition, fire investigators were not able to talk to her. Neighbors told fire investigators they were not aware of the fire until they heard the woman screaming in the street. Neighbors called 9-1-1. They said they did not hear any type of fireworks activity in the area before the fire.
This is the seventh fire fatality within the city of Las Vegas this year. Last year there were a total of three fatalities for the entire year.
