A manufacturing plant nearby our home produces a lot of heavy fumes that seem hazardous. How do I file a complaint?

There is a manufacturing company nearby our house that produces iron and steel.  We recently moved in and noticed that during certain times of the day, there are large amounts of fumes that are in the air.  Is there any way to see if the company is compliant with laws that protect our air and health?

Factories that produce iron and steel are commonly referred to as foundries. Metals are turned into parts by melting the metal into a liquid, pouring the metal in a mold, and then removing the mold material or casting. The fumes in the air are most likely resulting from the burning of the metals. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a government organization that is responsible in monitoring and analyzing the environment, conduct research, and work closely with state and local governments to devise pollution control policies. On April 22, 2004, EPA issued a regulation to control emissions from iron and steel foundries. The rule included emission limits for manufacturing processes and pollution prevention-based requirements to reduce air toxics from furnace charge materials and coating/binder formulations. The website provided below gives you information about specific rules about air emissions for steel foundries.  It would also be a good idea to see a doctor to see if you have any health problems from the exposure to the fumes.  If there is a possible connection, you may consider filing a toxic tort to gain compensation.   Furthermore, it would be best to consult with an Environmental Lawyer to determine the best course of action to take.
