Is this a case of libel or defamation? Can I file a personal injury lawsuit?

I have been working for a small privately owned company for almost 5 years. Recently, I was falsely accused of stealing and embezzling money from a new coworker when I know in fact I am innocent. I became terminated and am suffering emotional distress from the embarrassment I have faced around my coworkers. Can a lawyer help me in this situation?

First of all, it must be clearly determined and proven that you in fact are innocent and did not steal. What evidence did the accusing party to justify that their allegation against you is correct? Is there any evidence you have that clearly proves you did not steal? If you can dig up this evidence and clear your name, then the next thing you would need to do is determine that the person had malicious intent in their defamatory accusations about yourself. Then, you’d have a case of Defamation and can sue for emotional distress along with other damages. You should speak with an attorney and figure out if you can clear your name, and if the person in fact committed defamation.
