Question:

If I have consistent nausea is it likely I have a brain injury?

Answer:

While there can be many reasons for persistent nausea, you should consider important information for cases involving mild brain injury, if you have had any type of head bump, no matter how slight. If you have nausea which persists, and does not go away, then it could be a symptom of a more serious underlying problem. Head injuries happen often, whether as a result of a car accident, or a fall in your home. Many times, if the bump doesn’t seem to be especially serious, other than giving some minor pain, we ignore it, assuming it will go away in a few days.

Causes of Nausea

If your nausea symptoms don’t interfere with your normal daily life, they can be considered mild, and probably harmless. Many gastrointestinal issues can bring on nausea which generally goes away in a day or so. You may also have nausea symptoms from pregnancy (known as “morning sickness”), or from chemotherapy treatments for cancer. Constant nausea, however, can also stem from physical trauma such as a brain injury or concussion, or from an infection of the lining of the brain.

Getting Help

If you have nausea which does not go away, or worsens, you should see your doctor immediately, most especially if it is accompanied by headaches, trouble walking or speaking, vomiting, seizures, or weakness or numbness in your arms or legs. If you have seen a doctor and been told repeatedly there is “nothing wrong,” yet you know you have a serious problem, it may be time to seek the services of a personal injury attorney.
