Testing For Lead Paint

Lead poisoning leads to many health problems in both children and adults and for that reason, testing for lead paint is imperative if moving into a home that was built prior to 1978. Toys also need to be tested for lead paint due to the recent episodes of imported toys being found to have lead paint on them. There are companies that will inspect homes for the presence of lead prior to the purchaser making any commitments to buy. A complete survey of the home should be done to identify the presence and location of any lead hazards or a risk assessment to determine if a full inspection is warranted. This inspection should include all surfaces both inside the home and outside. The water should be tested to make certain that the pipes are not lead based leading to lead poisoned water. In addition to surfaces and water, soil samples should be surveyed to determine if aging paint has contaminated the soil making it a hazard, particularly for children who often put dirt in their mouth when playing. A lead hazard screening determines is a home has the potential to have lead hazards. If the potential is determined to be there then the assessor will recommend a full inspection be completed.
