Test For Lead Paint

Homes that were built prior to 1978 should be tested for lead to prevent the possibility of lead poisoning in children. There are several different avenues that can be taken when testing for lead: an inspection for lead-based paint can be done; a risk assessment for lead; and a hazard screening for lead. Individuals can also have a combination of these performed. The choice is typically based on why the testing is being done. A lead-based paint inspection is an inspection of the surfaces of the home. It is done one surface at time to determine which, if any, of the surfaces have lead-based paint. A risk assessment in an investigation that is done on-site to determine the presence, type, severity, and location of any lead-paint hazards that might exist, this test is used in homes suspected of lead. This includes a visual inspection, testing of woods with deterioration similar to wear and tear from a child; and, soil, dust and water testing for the presence of lead. A lead hazard screening is a limited version of the risk assessment for houses with a lower chance of lead exposure.
