Any instance where a surgeon fails to give the appropriate medical care to a patient before, during or after surgery may be referred to as "surgery medical malpractice". Some of the most common forms of surgery medical malpractice include failure to give sufficient information about the risks associated with surgery; going ahead with surgery which is not necessary; opting for surgery which is not appropriate for the particular patient or for the medical problem in question; mistakes made in surgery which are not appropriately addressed and lead to injury; and failure to give insufficient care after the operation to protect against infection and other complications. Surgical medical malpractice may have serious implications for the patient, leading to further injury and illness or even death. In many instances, the consequences of surgical medical malpractice may lead to long-term disability or lifelong illnesses, which may cause pain and suffering as well as having serious financial implications.
