Stripping Lead Paint

Stripping lead paint is just one method of removing the toxic paint and making a healthy environment for families with children. House built prior to 1978 inevitably have lead paint, even if the top paint layer is not lead, chances are good that there is a layer of lead paint underneath. If not removed, over time chipping and flaking will release the toxic lead into the atmosphere. Homeowner's can choose to call in a lead paint expert to strip away the paint, which is an expensive venture; or, they can choose to do it themselves using safety equipment and proper instructions. Lead paint can be removed through grinding, applying heat or using chemicals. Each has its advantages and disadvantages and each is hard work. Grinding the paint off using sanding disks is an efficient method on outside wood that is in relatively good shape; however, it does produce lead dust and safety precautions must be taken to keep from inhaling the dust, such as using tools with vacuums equipped to collect the dust. Heat methods are risking due to the chance of fire. Chemicals are a good choice but are caustic and hard to work with. Most organic strippers on the market and as strong as needed; however, there are a few that will do the job safely. Regardless of the method chosen, the paint that is removed should be bagged and trashed according to the rules in the home state.
