Spinal Injuries

The spinal cord is located in the back and reaches from the base of the brain to just above the waist. It is responsible for transmitting messages from the brain to other parts of the body including the muscles. If the spinal cord is hurt by trauma or injury then a spinal injury has occurred. Sometimes, the spinal cord is severed from the body. However, serious spinal injuries can occur without the spinal cord being severed. A person who is quadriplegic and loses muscle function throughout the body may need respirator support and continued therapy and aid to remain alive.

Fast Facts

  • Over 87% of spinal cord injury victims live in private homes rather than institutional settings.
  • Most patients reach their maximum recovery threshold within 6 months of their spinal injury. However, some patients can continue to recover use of paralyzed muscles several years after an accident occurs.
