Pedestrian-car accidents can have many different causes, and carry a high potential to cause serious injury to all parties involved. They can be the fault of the pedestrian, the driver, or both. Common pedestrian faults include ignoring traffic controls (walk/don't walk), jaywalking and walking on a limited access highway that is marked as ﾑno pedestrians'. Common driver errors that contribute to pedestrian-car accidents include driving while intoxicated, disregarding a traffic control device and disregarding a crosswalk. Bad weather, poor road design, poor road conditions and vehicle defects are just some of the more common contributing factors. These types of accidents are more common in urban areas, as pedestrian activity and motor vehicle presence are greater in these areas than urban areas. With such high potential for serious injury and/or death, lawsuits are common in this field, though not every pedestrian-car accident results in litigation.
