Cars and pedestrians are not a good mix. When the two collide the results are often catastrophic, with the pedestrian being the one with injuries. Because pedestrian-car accidents rarely occur off the roadway, it is up to the pedestrian to exercise great caution when walking in the roadway. There are situations in which the pedestrian needs to be more cautious to avoid being the victim of a pedestrian car accident. In these situations, the chances of being hit are significantly higher than in other situations: Ignoring traffic signals: Pedestrian traffic controls are timed to allow pedestrians time to walk from one side to the other. However, many of these stop lights don't allow enough time to get across safely or there are no traffic controls for pedestrians, and they have to use their best judgment. Darting children: Children will often ﾑdart' out into the street without regard for traffic. They may be chasing their pet or a ball that has gone into the highway. Cars should be on the lookout for this in neighborhoods, but since they are not always so, parents need to be particularly aware of children near roadways. Limited access highways: Some roads are not meant for pedestrians, there are no sidewalks and very little road shoulder. If a pedestrian finds themselves having to walk on these highways, they should do so for as short of a distance as possible.
