Occupational Diseases

Occupational diseases are lasting illnesses (not injuries) caused by a person's activities at work. These diseases are specifically prevalent in workers, especially workers in certain industries. However, not all occupational diseases are a direct result of the occupation itself; some are caused by some other non-safe element present where work is completed. For example, a worker at an auto manufacturing plant might be exposed to asbestos at the site, although he may not deal with asbestos directly. There are also certain occupations which are inherently dangerous — coal miners must inhale coal, which might induce lung disease or asthma, for example. The following are other common examples of occupational diseases: byssinosis, asbestosis, eczema, carpal tunnel, lead poisoning, radiation sickness, and hyperchlorhydria.
