Medical Misdiagnosis

Medical misdiagnosis, although common, is not always malpractice. Medical science is not an exact science and even standard tests and following proper procedures and protocol can result in misdiagnosis. However, medical misdiagnosis can be malpractice if the doctor is not thorough in finding out the patient's history, ordering necessary and appropriate tests or does not recognize symptoms. Often medical misdiagnosis can occur because of a physician being too quick to jump to a conclusion and not wavering from his conclusion despite continued symptoms and lack of remedy for the patient. Insurance companies unwittingly play a part in some misdiagnosis cases. If the insurance company refuses payment for certain testing, the doctor has no way of finding out if an alternate diagnosis is possible. Regardless of the cause, medical misdiagnosis can lead to prolonged illness, advancement of diseases that could be slowed or in worst case scenario death. An excellent example is the misdiagnosis in women of panic attacks and heart conditions. Doctors often diagnose women with panic attacks, when, in fact, they are having heart trouble that can lead to heart attacks. If not discovered the condition can worsen and lead to death. Medical misdiagnosis is a serious concern, and if it is suspected, a second opinion should be sought.
