Liability

In a personal injury or other civil lawsuit, the person who is at fault for another's injury has a liability to the person they injured. This means they have some obligation or responsibility to the person, either financially or legally. In court, a person who has been determined liable will be judged to pay an amount in damages — between punitive damages, compensatory damages, and aggravated damages. Once damages are paid, they will be disbursed unto the plaintiff, whose injuries happened due to the defendant's actions. To shield themselves from damages arising out of liability, some people may acquire insurance coverage known as liability insurance — which might cover them in general, or in specific scenarios like in a car accident or in-home injury.
