Lead Poisoning Toys

Lead paint poses a significant health risk to children as it may lead to intellectual development difficulties resulting from lead poisoning. As a result, lead paint is banned from use in toy manufacturing in the U.S. If toys are contaminated with lead this may be very dangerous since children may place the toys in their mouths, where substantial amounts of the metal will be absorbed into the bloodstream. Several cases of lead poisoning toys have however occurred in the past few years, where toys have been contaminated while being manufactured in factories abroad. This has resulted in mass recalls of products which have been sold to the public which have later been shown to be contaminated. For example in 2007, lead poisoning toys which were recalled included Thomas the Tank Engine toys and 83 different products made by Fisher-Price.

Fast Facts

  • Fisher-Price recalled 967,000 toys in 2007, including those from Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer lines
  • 1 in 3 contaminated toys makes it to the customer before the contamination is identified by the manufacturer
