Lead has long been known to cause severe behavioral and developmental health issues in children; however, lead poisoning symptoms do not appear until the lead level in the blood stream has reached dangerous levels. This happens when the exposure is over a low period of time, such as lead paint on the walls of an older house. Children with low blood levels of lead may not have symptoms that are easily identified. There may be learning disorders that are blamed on other issues and they may be smaller than children in their age group. Long term exposure to lead will lead to other characteristics appearing in children, including: Irritability or aggressiveness that is unusual for the child; Hyperactivity, impulsiveness, inability to concentrate; Learning problems; Lack of interest in daily playing; Loss of appetite. Poor coordination; Weakness in the hands and feet; Headaches; Seizures; Coma. Diagnosing lead poisoning is difficult due to these symptoms mimicking so many other illnesses. However, it is imperative to get a proper diagnosis in order to get proper treatment. If symptoms appear and lead is in the house, make sure the doctor is aware and propter treatment is started.
