Lead paints are paints that are no longer in use in the U.S due to the detrimental effects they have on children's development and growth. Lead was added to the paint to increase its drying speed, its durability, and to assist in resisting moisture that causes erosion. Paint with lead is still used in some industrial applications and for painting roadways and parking lot markings. Lead and lead paints are dangerous, especially for young children under the age of six. Their bodies are still developing and growing. When exposed to lead, they can experience central nervous system damage, hearing loss, growth abnormalities, and delays in development. Adult exposure to lead based paints can cause problems with reproduction. Lead paints are not the only source of lead and lead poisoning, lead is sometimes found in drinking water due to older plumbing systems having lead pipes, which corrode and cause lead to contaminate the water. Lead paints are still used in other countries, which make it difficult to know if toys imported are safe. The government is cracking down on these countries and their toy imports.
