Lead Paint Children

Lead paint has been linked to a multitude of health issues in children, including hearing impairments, growth abnormalities and low I.Q. Now, research is leading doctors to believe there is a link between ADHD and lead paint children, those children exposed to lead in the early years of development. Researchers have linked a genetic variation in one of the dopamine receptors and the development of ADHD; additionally they have shown that there is prevalence for this to appear in boys more so than girls. The link between ADHD and lead poisoning was a natural progression in the research as it was already proven that children exposed to lead had attention issues. ADHD is not the only disorder that children with lead poisoning can suffer from as they grow and develop. Lead exposure can lead to the potential for miscarriages later in life and to a lower sperm count in adult men. Although there is not enough proof at the present time, the EPA has determined that lead has the potential to be a carcinogenic. Children, with their still developing bodies and brains, are the most susceptible to being poisoned by lead. They are also more likely than adults to put their hands in their mouths, thereby transferring lead to their body. Parents should be diligent in teaching children to keep their hands out of their mouth and in making sure their home is lead free.
