History Of Lead Poisoning

Even as far back as the ancient Romans, lead was recognized to be a somewhat toxic metal, associated with the god Saturn and identified as leading to changes in mood for people contaminated by lead. During the Middle Ages, lead gained notoriety as a poison of choice, due to being undetectable and causing a slow death. In more recent history of lead poisoning, the main source of the problem has been from incorporation of lead into things which people have contact with everyday, such as leaded gas, lead-based paint, and household plumbing. The knowledge of our ancestors as to how poisonous it can be seems to have been lost somewhere along the way, and it is only since the 1970s that people have rediscovered the health hazards posed by lead. During the 1970s however, lead paint was banned from use in homes and the catalytic converter was invented, both of which aimed to cut our everyday exposure to lead and reduce our risk of lead poisoning.
