The Fen-Phen drug was an anorectic drug used to treat obesity. It consisted of a combination of two drugs: fenfluramine and Phentermine. Later, another obesity drug was involved in the Fen-Phen claim, dexfenfluramine. The infamous history of the Fen-Phen drug started in the early 1990s. Previously, fenfluramine had been used for weight loss, but it did not work as well as people wanted it to. However, in the 1990s when combined with Phentermine and later fenfluramine, the drug became the craze for weight loss. Later, reports of heart abnormalities began to surface, primarily in women who had taken the Fen-Phen combination. Finally, in 1997 after many reports of valvular heart disease and pulmonary hypertension in women who had taken Fen-Phen, the FDA requested its withdrawal from the market. By 2004, Fen-Phen was no longer available and by 2005 more than 50,000 product liability lawsuits had been filed on behalf of patients taking the drug combination. As late as 2008 there were still cases of heart damage due to the combination appearing in lawyer's offices and many more cases could appear in years to come as the heart damage shows itself.
