Erb Palsy

Erb Palsy is a type of cerebral palsy. Sometimes referred to as Erb-Duchenne palsy or Erb's palsy, it is indicated by damage to the nerves resulting in paralysis of the lower brachial plexus. An individual with Erb palsy has an arm that appears weak or does not move properly. This mild form of hemilegia can be categorized as avulsion, rupture, praxis (stretch) or neuroma. This is based on the type of nerve damage. Diagnosis of Erb palsy requires neurological evaluation. While many types of cerbral palsy are not caused by any type of nerve trauma, Erb palsy is not among this group. Erb palsy may result when the brachial plexus nerves of the shoulder are adversely effected during delivery. The nerves are torn from the spine, ruptured or otherwise damaged. If this is the case, you should consult an attorney to see about filing a malpractice suit against the doctor, midwife or medical practitioner responsible for the baby's condition.
