Brain Injury Prevention

Brain injuries, both mild and severe, have life long, severe repercussions that are preventable. Brain injury prevention steps will not stop the incidence of brain injuries but it will lessen the incidence of brain injury. There are steps people can take to lessen the likelihood of brain injuries occurring. These include: Wearing seatbelts; Adjusting head rests in cars to the appropriate height; Using age appropriate child seats; Wearing a helmet or making sure children wear a helmet when biking, skating, skateboarding, riding scooters, sledding, skiing, playing football or hockey, and horse riding. Storing firearms and bullets in a locked cabinet or safe when not in use. Do not shake babies for any reason. Avoid drinking and driving or driving under the influence of prescription drugs. The use of safety gear goes a long way in preventing accidents. Teenagers in particular need to understand the risk associated with not wearing a helmet, they may feel it is ムuncool' to wear a helmet; however, it will be even more ムuncool' to be in a coma from a head injury. Taking steps to prevent head injury can mean the difference in leading a happy, productive life and living a life filled with mental and emotional difficulties due to brain injury.
