Baby Head Injuries

Baby head injuries usually result from natural childhood behaviors such as falling over and banging their head on objects around the house, but also may result from actions such as hitting or shaking a baby. Much of the time when babies injure their heads the skull prevents any major damage from occurring. Most head injuries will result in bruising and small lumps, and some may result in cuts to the head, which will bleed a lot but may be stopped easily and may not be too serious. The main concern with baby head injuries is if they result in damage to the brain. If bleeding occurs inside the skull this can increase the pressure around the brain and cause injury to the tissue. This can lead to problems such as brain damage, coma and death if not addressed by a physician. The main signs of a more serious head injury requiring medical attention include loss of consciousness, changes in behavior, loss of balance, vomiting and changes in eye movement and vision. Parents should get their baby's head injury checked if any of these signs present.
