Toys With Lead Paint

Toys with lead paint are likely to pose a particular risk to young children, as when lead paint is placed in the mouth, very high proportions of the metal are absorbed into the blood through the mouth. Once the lead in the blood stream reaches more than 10?g/dL, this may lead to developmental difficulties, including lowered IQ and other intellectual deficits. Although lead paint has been illegal in the manufacture of toys in the U.S. since 1978, toys with lead paint may still be imported from other countries where no such ban exists. This includes many countries from which the largest toy manufacturers import their goods, for example China and India. Older toys may also still contain lead paint, and so should not be given to children who may place them in their mouths.

Fast Facts

  • 54% of children in the U.S. have enough lead in their blood to lower their IQ
  • In 2007, more than 2.5 million imported toys were recalled due to containing lead paint
