Severe Injuries

The definition of "severe injuries" may differ according to different country or state laws. It may also be defined differently in different legal documents, for example different insurance policies may have conflicting definitions of what precisely they determine to be severe. In general, sever injuries usually include: any event which causes significant injury to the brain; any injury which leads to physical disability, such as paraplegia (the loss of use of one or both legs) or quadriplegia (the loss of use of arms and legs); any injury which leads to amputation; burns covering a significant part of the body (usually more than 50%), burns which cause problems with mobility or communication, burns which cause disfigurement of the face, arms or legs, or burns which cause complications with the airways; injuries leading to permanent blindness. Severe injuries are likely to require in-patient hospital care and often have long-term consequences such as loss of mobility or functioning, poor health, and long-term care requirements.
