Raped Victims

"Rape" is the term which is used to describe an extreme form of sexual assault in which a person is forced to have sexual intercourse, or is sexually penetrated, without their consent. Although women may be at higher risk of rape, men may also become rape victims. A substantial number of raped victims are also children under the age of 17 years old. Victims of rape may suffer physical injuries as a result of their attack, and may also fall pregnant. There are also likely to be significant psychological consequences for rape victims, with attacks greatly increasing the risk of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol and other substance abuse. Many raped victims may also attempt to commit suicide as a result of the long-lasting anguish caused by such an attack.
