The government passed legislation in 1996 which places a legal obligation on landlords to disclose to tenants the amount of lead paint present in any house they are letting. In addition to disclosing this information, landlords are also obliged to provide information on the risks associated with lead-based paint by providing tenants with the pamphlet "Protect Your Family from Lead in the Home". All lead paint landlords are obliged to follow this legislation, regardless of whether they are a large lettings company or an individual letting their own house for a period of time. The legislation is aimed at reducing lead poisoning by making all tenants aware of the health risks associated with lead paint, especially in children, and how they can protect themselves from this risk. Landlords found guilty of not providing appropriate information on the risk to tenants may be fined up to $10,000 or more.
