Illegal Ephedra

Ephedra, also known as "ma huang", is a herbal remedy which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Ephedra is more widely known in the West for its properties associated with weight loss. Prior to being banned by the FDA in 2003, ephedra was found in a large number of weight loss supplements. After a number of deaths were associated with the product, the decision was however made to ban ephedra from use in these products. Contrary to popular belief, the law was only changed to make it illegal to include ephedra in weight-loss products, and it may still be found in many over-the-counter medicines for other conditions. Many people in the U.S. are also believed to still be importing illegal ephedra from sites offering weight-loss supplements for sale over the Internet.
