Ferries are the safest form of transport in the US, but ferry accidents do occur and may take many forms. The most commonly publicized are ferry accidents which involve fires and explosions, ferry collisions with other vessels or structures, incidents in which a ferry runs aground, and ferry accidents which lead to sinking. Other less publicized types of ferry accident also include incidents which happen onboard due to rough seas which may lead to passenger injuries, incidents which lead to injury while loading or unloading the ferry and failure of equipment onboard leading to injury. Any ferry accident has the potential to cause significant injury to passengers and crew. Large ferry accidents are less common in the US than in developing nations, but do still occur ﾖ for example a Staten Island ferry crashed into a pier in 2003, killing 11 and injuring 73.
