Pondimin and Redux were two diet drugs used by millions of people prior to 1997. They are also known as Fen-Phen, based on their scientific names fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine. As a combined diet medication, Fen-Phen's sales skyrocketed and became the diet craze. Well over two million people took the combination drug to lose weight. Then, in 1997 the drug combination was linked to heart valve disease. In the claim, the plaintiffs stated that evidence showed that even before being withdrawn from the market that AHP received information regarding the drugs connection to heart valve damage. The plaintiffs stated that AHP failed to investigate these claims of heart valve damage. In the end, the makers of the drug, AHP, did not admit to any wrongdoing but did agree to settle the case and to set aside money for pending or future cases of heart valve disease that could be related to Fen-Phen. The settlement divides the exposed persons into groups based on which drug was taken and for how long. Compensation is then divided into four matrices of compensation payments and future medical payments matched to the groups of patients.
