Fatal train accidents, also known as fatal rail accidents, and have been recorded since 1815, when a boiler exploded on ﾑBrunton's Mechanical Traveler', in Durham, England, killing 13 people. Train accidents occur on a regular basis around the world, though only a small percentage result in human death and are recorded as ﾑfatal'. Fatal train accidents do however draw large amounts of media attention. The worst train accident in recent times was the 2004 Queen of the Sea train disaster, in which around 1,700 people were killed in Sri Lanka during the Indian Ocean Earthquake. There are many causes of fatal train accidents, including explosions, collisions with other trains and other vehicles, and derailing.
