In 2003, ephedra, also known as "ma huang" was banned from inclusion in weight-loss products in the U.S. after the FDA received numerous reports of adverse health effects and even deaths associated with its use. Some of the ephedra health effects which were reported most frequently included sickness and nausea, headaches, dizziness, anxiety, upset stomach, tremors, heart palpitations or an irregular and pounding heart, restlessness, insomnia, sweating, increased urination and kidney stones. There were also some reports of psychosis developing as a side effect of the drug, as well as several deaths associated with an increase in blood pressure and stroke. Ephedra health effects may also be greatly increased in those who already have existing heart conditions or other illnesses such as kidney disorders, history of stroke or thyroid disease.
