Childhood Lead Poisoning

Lead poisoning in children is the most common health problem caused by environmental issues in children under the age of six. It is also a health issue that has no obvious symptoms and goes undetected until major damage has been done to the child's body. Lead that gets in a child's blood can cause severe health issues, including brain damage, mental retardation, liver and kidney damage, behavioral problems, hearing loss, hyperactivity, developmental issues and in some cases death. They can lead poisoning from living in older homes with lead paint. They will inevitably put their hands on walls and then in their mouths or will inhale dust from the peeling paint as it ages. Children usually get lead poisoning from touching toys made with lead products and then putting their hands or fingers in their mouth. Under a new Federal law, children's products with more than 600 ppm total lead cannot be sold in the United States after February 10, 2009, on August 14, 2009 that number drops to 300 ppm. Toy and other lead contaminated recalled products are made public knowledge and retailers cannot legally sale these products, a law that extends to second-hand and thrift stores. Homes with lead paint should be renovated by professionals if possible. If the home is an apartment or government subsidized home, the landlord should be contacted for remedy.
