Cerebral Palsy Infants

Cerebral palsy is one of the most common disorders of movement and posture in children. A deviation of the central nervous system or damage to the newly formed brained is what causes the disorder, although exactly what causes these happenings is not one hundred percent known. Cerebral palsy is not always obvious at birth and may not be noticed until lack of motor skills becomes evident, usually between 6 and 18 months of age. There is seldom a single, definitive cause of cerebral palsy identified. Doctors will attempt to reconstruct events leading to the pregnancy, the pregnancy and the delivery to determine if there are incidents related to the cerebral palsy. There are factors that are associated with cerebral palsy that have been identified, including fetal distress during labor, extreme prematurity or low birth weight, lack of oxygen to the infant or exposure to a toxic substance during pregnancy. Birth injuries can lead to cerebral palsy and are preventable and avoidable. Cerebral palsy infants are destined to a lifetime of obstacles and costly medical care. If the disorder is caused by an avoidable birth injury, it is feasible to expect that the attending doctors or medical facility should assist in those costs. Families should contact a cerebral palsy expert to determine who, if anyone was at fault.
