Adult Lead Poisoning

The focus of lead poisoning is so loudly placed on children and the harm it does to their still-developing bodies that many people tend to overlook adult lead poisoning. Adult lead poisoning typically occurs from exposure to lead in the workplace or in hobbies that involve the use of lead-based products. Workplace exposure can occur in industries such as: Radiator, battery or automotive repair; Ceramics making and glazing; Soldering or cutting of metal and other industries. Hobbies that lead to lead exposure can include the following: Using or making metal fishing sinkers; Making bullets or shooting guns at indoor ranges; Welding, auto or boat repair; Ceramics, stained glass or jewelry; Furniture refinishing. In addition to being poisoned themselves if involved in these activities, individuals may bring home lead dust in their clothing, inadvertently exposing family members to lead. Adults with lead poisoning often don't realize they are sick. Most of the symptoms can seem general and be related to a host of other causes. Symptoms generally include tiredness, irritability, trouble sleeping, headaches, stomach aces, loss of appetite and weight loss. Long term exposure to lead can lead to impotency, brain and nervous system damage, high blood pressure, hearing, vision and muscle coordination and more. If lead poisoning is suspected a doctor should be consulted at once.
